What do a little espresso cup and a torn-up sandal have in common? Well, the words you surround yourself with and use in daily conversation matter. I think about this every morning when I drink my perfectly caffeinated shot of energy and encouragement in this little mug, “Find joy in each day” (St. Philip Neri). I use both the espresso and this thought to propel some positivity and forward momentum into the day. I could drink out of any old mug, but this one does bring joy, especially with a simple ritual that I can rely on whenever I am at home. On a more humorous note, when one names a puppy “Mako,” you shouldn’t be surprised to find out one day that your flip-flops are missing a shark-bite chunk!
These simple examples lead to thoughts about how we can shape our days as well as our interactions with others. A friendly "hello" or "thank you" can provide the boost a friend or stranger may need to get through a rough day. In contrast, an annoyed snapped response to a family member can change the mood in your house for the rest of the day. What you listen to or read can also impact your mood and how you approach the day. Think about how a favorite uplifting song can change your attitude in seconds, or being immersed in a book can transport to another time, place, or world. Of course, being aware of current events is important, but is it necessary to listen to another depressing, stressful newscast while eating dinner?
At the end of the day, words, both written and spoken, are one of the major components of human connection and interaction. I know I fail regularly, but we can all try to surround ourself with and put meaningful words into our environment. What are some of your favorite ways to experience words and share them with others?
